US withdrawl from Vietnam |
There were two main reasons that the US pulled out of Vietnam. First, they were being defeated by the Viet Cong (the Viet Cong were absolutley prepared to die for Northern Vietnam) and second, there was a large amount of social opposition to the war in America. Nixon (the next guy after Kennedy) pulled out under the plan of Vietnamization, which was the giving of large amounts of economic support to the South. In the end, the North was victorious and Vietnam became a communist country. |

Yom Kippur war |
During the celebration of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Egyptian armed forces moved into the Sinai and Syria attacked along the Golan Heights. The Israelis attacked Egypt and left the Egyptian army in the Sinai, which raised the possibility of the Egyptian being sealed in by the Israelis. The Russians saw this and told Sadat (leader of Egypt) to retreat. They did this but then used another weapon against the Israelis. They raised the price of oil and claimed that it wouldn't drop until Israel withdrew from the Sinai. The US and Britain (dependent on the oil) persuaded Israel to withdraw from some areas of the Sinai. |
