Mao thought that there was too much specialization in jobs and decided that the Chinese people needed a "return to the fields". This idea appealed to the youth of China, who joined the red guards and carried red books with the quotations of Chairman Mao. These red guards went around China tormenting teachers and artists, humiliating them and forcing them to work in the fields.
