Battles of Midway and Coral Sea
Both of these attacks were between the American and Japanese Navy. The first, on the Coral Sea, saw the Americans defeat the Japanese supply boats trying to reach the Japanese troops in New Guinnea. The second, the battle of Midway, was another Japanese attempt at a surprise attack on the American navy. It failed because the Americans knew they were coming and it resulted in Japan becmoing a third rate naval power.
